Dear Arts Community,
I am proud to share that in September my production company (Method Productions) will be producing the first Singapore Monologue Slam (SMS) to be hosted at *SCAPE. I loved attending monologue slams when I lived in LA and I’m really excited to introduce this performance format to my home country.
Considering how new the concept of SMS is I can understand that there may be a few questions about my motivations to launch this event. The arts scene in Singapore is flourishing. There’s fantastic momentum at the moment and I’m enthused by the increasing number of platforms where performers can share their voice. I hope SMS will be a welcome addition.
As an acting coach it’s my responsibility to nurture creative talent. SMS is an extension of this. I’ve worked hard to integrate learning benefits into what SMS stands for including our ‘Hang Out’ sessions where those thinking of entering can come to HCAC see some monologues performed, browse the selection of monologues in our studio library, get personalised feedback on your choice of monologues for the SMS and share ideas with peers. There is, of course, the monologue skills masterclass included in the entry price which aims to help participants prepare for the big day. SMS may be a competition but I also hope it is an opportunity for collaboration, networking and support before, during and after the event. I’m so thankful for the wonderful support I’ve had from some industry peers. To those of you out there who I haven’t yet had the pleasure to connect with I sincerely look forward to a positive future where we can unite and build this community together. If you have words of advice (this is the first time I’ve organised an event of this nature and I’m certainly on a learning curve!), concerns, thoughts or questions please don’t hesitate to reach out to me directly. I’d love to hear from you.
Those who know me personally know I put my heart into everything I do to build a positive legacy for my family, for the arts and for Singapore. It’s the reason I started my school and it’s the reason I’m developing SMS. My wish is that SMS will be an annual event that the all of us (the arts community here in Singapore) can be very, very proud of.
With hope towards the future,
Kamil Haque
